The key ingredient

What is the “key ingredient” that makes a performance great? As musicians, we continuously strive for perfection, a frustratingly elusive quest! Without a doubt, some musicians come much closer to this goal than others. But what is it that makes a performance really special?  For me it is those indescribable, intangible moments that defy description: that one voice that somehow reaches into your soul, that perfectly timed swell in the orchestra at just the right moment, that momentary spellbinding breath that was perfectly placed…in other words, it’s magic.

Turandot.1 I just returned home from conducting a magical production of Turandot for Manitoba Opera and hope to inspire some young singers to capture their own magic through teaching at the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy at Western University this summer.
