Mr. Paterson was instrumental in developing the Opera Lyra Ottawa Opera Studio, a training program for aspiring opera singers, stage directors, conductor/coaches and stage managers. Under his guidance, the Opera Studio became highly effective training program which included invaluable performance opportunities for young Canadian artists. Several of the past participants of the program have gone on to sing roles with a variety of opera companies including The MET, Seattle Opera, Paris Opera, Montreal Opera, Opera Lyra Ottawa and several other companies.

In addition, he has introduced the “Silver Cast” performances for Opera Lyra Ottawa. The purpose of the “Silver Cast” is twofold: to create great performance opportunities of major roles for aspiring opera singers and to present a full-scale opera, complete with sets, costumes, and orchestra for young student audiences. It is believed that this is a unique program in Canada and continues to be a huge success with the ‘Silver Cast” performance, comprising school children, being sold-out each year!

Mr. Paterson has also taught at the university level having served as the Music Director of the Symphonic Band at the University of Calgary and as Guest Lecturer and conducting coach for the Graduate Wind Conducting Program. Early in his career he led numerous student and amateur groups, holding several conducting posts with ensembles including The Calgary Boys’ Choir and The Calgary Youth Orchestra. After completing a bachelor of Music degree, he continued his studies leading to a Professional Teaching Certificate and was subsequently employed as a teacher for the Calgary Board of Education. He then went on to pursue graduate level studies at Westminster Choir College, advanced orchestral conducting training in California as well as further studies in Florence and Siena, Italy.

He has also coached and/or conducted for various other student programs including Opera on the Avalon,  Opera Lyra Ottawa, the University of Calgary, the Camrose Summer Music Program, Viva Musica in Kelowna, B.C., the Okanagan Vocal Arts Festival and the University of British Columbia.
