In addition to possessing over twenty-five years’ experience as a professional conductor, Maestro Paterson makes time to help budding musicians of all levels and all ages. His vast and varied experience as both a performer and a teacher makes him the perfect choice for your educational needs. He is equally comfortable teaching students of either a professional level or students with little experience.
He is currently accepting:
- singing students of all levels
- advanced students for opera coaching
- conducting students with music background and training
Ty is one of Canada’s leading opera conductors, vocal coaches and educators. He served as the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for Opera Lyra Ottawa, which performs at the National Arts Centre, for sixteen seasons from 1998 – 2014. He has worked with every level of singer from children’s choirs and amateur church choirs to the country’s leading opera singers, including Ben Heppner, Richard Margison, Russell Braun, Michael Schade, Judith Forst, and Tracy Dahl just to name a few. He has conducted professional opera performances and orchestras across Canada, USA, Europe and Asia.
In addition to his extensive professional experience, he has served as a professional teacher for the Calgary Board of Education, served as a sessional instructor and guest lecturer for the University of Calgary, and led performances for the University of British Columbia and the Opera on the Avalon summer opera training program in Newfoundland. He has also served as a vocal coach and instructor for various workshops and master classes including the Montreal Opera, Opera Lyra Ottawa and amateur workshops including the Camrose Summer Music Camp. He has also led classes for the Canadian Operatic Arts Academy at Western University.
He graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Music and continued his studies to achieve a Professional Teacher’s Certificate. He pursued further studies at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, as well as The University of Redlands in California and also took language studies in Florence and Sienna, Italy. He is currently completing a Master’s degree in Management.
